All About Briquettes:
Information on the similarities and differences between
briquettes and pellets and how to use briquettes as fuel.

Switchgrass briquettes
(1.5") and pellets (0.25")
Hardwood briquettes (1.5") and pellets (0.25")
Both briquettes and pellets
can be made of the same materials, but their different size gives
them different uses. Similarities and differences are listed
below.
Similarities between
briquettes and pellets:
-
BTU content is the same,
approximately 7,000 - 8,000 BTU's per lb. for both wood
and grass
-
Energy content of 1 ton (2000 lbs.) of
briquettes or pellets is equal to approximately 120 gallons of
fuel oil
-
Ash content is the same for a
given material
Differences between
briquettes and pellets:
-
The briquetting process
is more reliable and repeatable than pelleting
-
Briquetting is more
tolerant to different moisture levels than pelleting
-
The briquetting process
is more energy efficient than pelleting
-
Briquetting requires
less pre-processing of the raw material (less grinding and
drying)
-
Larger size makes
briquettes suitable for different combustion equipment than for
pellets
-
Briquettes will not feed in pellet stoves but many boilers and multi-fuel
biomass combustion equipment
can handle them well
Below is a listing of
stoves, boilers and furnaces that can feed and burn briquettes from
the Slugger fuel press. This list is not comprehensive and
there are likely many more manufacturers of combustion equipment
available to utilize this fuel source. If you are a
manufacturer of combustion equipment and would like to have your
equipment listed here or would like a sample of briquettes to test,
please contact us
with your request.
